Having problems getting the drivers working. Its windows 8 and the software installed no problem but when I connect it up there is nothing to select in the port option therefore I cannot get it to open.

I have downloaded numerous drivers but nothing seems to work.

The laptop has called it "Prolific USB to Serial Comm Port" and that the best drivers are installed and when I tried to direct it to any other folder it says drivers are up to date.

When i go into it through device manager it says Error Code 10?

Still not working on mine. How did you install it on windows 7 and what does it call it?

Cheers
Just to explain, I run it using a 'Virtual PC' on a Macbook Air (this won't make a difference to the drivers or the setup procedure). I discarded the Windows 7 version, because it runs happily on XP and it takes up less space.

So...first I checked to see what it reports the hardware (ELM cable) as on XP - in Device Manager under Ports (COM & LPT) it says: Silicon Labs CP201x USB to UART Bridge (COM3)

Then I started up a Windows 7 Virtual PC - the cable has not been plugged into it before.

I installed the cable drivers (BEFORE plugging the cable in).

Then I plugged the cable in and got the usual 'installing device drivers' message in the system tray (lower right corner) - and then an 'installed successfully' message.

A quick check in Device Manager reveals exactly the same as it did for XP - like this:

Next I installed the Runtime.exe to load all of the DLLs.

Then I ran the ELMConfig.exe and got this:

Switch it to English, press Offline to try it out - and Bob's your uncle. It works. After that you have to do the programming thing with Putty (assuming that's still applicable - I did it and got on fine) and then it will work with your car.

If you've got any related entries in Device Manager under Ports, I'd try deleting them, installing the cable drivers and then plug in the cable as detailed above.
