My dads due to get his license back in January, thing is, will he be able to drive his bike, tow a trailer etc? Does it go back to how it was or will he be classed a a new driver! Think that makes sense?

He should be absolutely fine. Not to worry you, but it's worth double checking all his eligible classes are still there. Its not unheard of for DVLA to "lose" previously approved categories even on simple licence changes like changes of address. The onus is then on you to produce you pass certificates for categories such as motorcycles.
Providing he hasn't be asked to resit his test he should get it all back. I had 6 Month ban back in the 90's for TT99 (totting up) applied for my license just before the 6 month ended and started driving again with all the same privileges. Except a TT99 stamp under convictions.
after a totting up ban you effectively have zero points again. however, you should have a "TT99" conviction listed for 5 yrs which you have to tell your insurance company about, and they will gladly add 20%
So in theory you could end up paying for points for 8 years.
So could get first set of points at the start of your 3 years, right near the end pick up your last lot then have TT99 on your license for 5 years
Same Applies for Short Notice Disqualification. ie 1 month. No points are added but it still under convictions to declare to insurance company.
