right my AP brakes should be here very soon.. me and my mate (a mechanic) are planning to fit them on the drive! just wondering is there any need to plug into the car to do anything bleed the system etc etc?

The Brakes will need bleeding (which your Mechanic will know) , other than that it should just be a simple swap over .
Should only have to plug it in to release the electronic handbrake, on most of the vag group now! I thought it was only BMW that had to be plugged in for the pad wear reset.
