As my car is used as a daily driver I plan on fitting winter tyres

I have available some with a speed rating of W. but believe the rating should be Y for the Focus RS.

does this Matter at all as it's only 2 ratings below?

not like in winter I'm likely to be doing speeds of 150mph+

heard it may affect insurance if fitting lower speed rating,

if fitting winter tyres is the rating class for our car lower, or still Y?

(PS - tried putting this in the Tyres/Wheels area but no response and could do with getting some ordered)

Hi guys.

Any one know this? Searched the forum and can't find the answer

Checked the Ford focus owners manual and it states ZR tyres

Does that mean I can use V or W rated?

Thanks

Not 100% sure on this but my money would be on having winter tyres that are the same Y rating as the summer ones; the possible issue i can see if you went for tyres with a lower speed rating is if the worst happened and you had an accident, the insurance company might cause problems with a claim due to you having tyres fitted that were not in accordance with the manufacturer spec. Maybe give the insurers a call if you're not sure?

@Kaywood

Pray tell me where you are going to driving at the full speed in an RS over winter?

God help you if you try to attempt it is what I will say.

Winter tyres are lower rated and the top speed of vehicles is reduced accordingly.

In Germany where it is a legal requirement from Oct through to March, Ford fit winter tyres to their company cars and on the dash of each car is the reduced top speed information.

What you need to be asking is what is the speed limit of the winter tyres I will be fitting,

not where can I get a Y rayed tyre as I don't believe they exist.

I hope this helps.

@peteg22

Pete,
On the Certificate of Conformance (CoC), there are alternative wheel & tyre sizes for the RS.
Field 50 states (of the stage 1 CoC):
Alternate Tyres 205/50 R17 89 QM+S (Axle) 7Jx17H2OS50.0 (1+2) - from reading the other thread (link below) I think OS50 = Offset

I believe one of these might even be for Winter tyres in countries where they are legally required.
Or the first is the tyre & the second group of info is the Wheel type.

I will also try to lay my hands on a Stage 2 CoC from CGN Teknik to see if there is any additional information.

And this link to the ABI guide for Winter tyres is very useful as it lists a lot of insurers as well

Thanks for the info guys!

@Dave276, I put "its not like I will be doing 150+ mph" hence why I assumed winter tyres may have a lower speed rating.

thanks for the further details as well Dave, I'd found that topic and responded to Andy as that PDF shows that you can use V or W rated tyres. but my Focus owners hand book just states ZR. looks like after a quick google ZR is the old rating for V,W Y rated tyres

cheers guys

This is my 7th winter in the RS & never used winter tyres, never once felt the need for them. :yep:
ive been using winter tyres on all my cars now for the last 5 years, swear by them, (though I live by the Yorkshire Dales. all hills and country roads, so when its icy/snowly its a nightmare)
