Hey all,

Owned my RS 10 years today :D

And it's this time of year it goes into Ford for its annual service - it has had a full Ford service history in my time with timing belt done by mountune in 2019 when getting the car forged.

I take it to a TrustFord centre just outside Belfast - the main reason I take it there as I am friends with one of the techs and I knew it was in good hands and he got me friends and family discount on the work carried out.

My friend has since left but I still take the car there as I've never had any issues with them servicing it...until now.

I rang up this week to book it in, was told it's a major service as spark plugs required and I also went for the aircon refresh as it make the car smell new again at £34.

So oil, filter, pollen filter, spark plugs and aircon refresh....£670

Asked if that was correct and was told yes, I then asked what it was without the spark plugs....£500

Surely this can't be right? I know inflation is high but surely a standard service isn't £500 these days for our cars?

Any replies/experiences from others appreciated.

give Andy at a&k a call for the spark plugs. I can’t recall the last price I paid, but it certainly wasn’t £170, bearing in mind though that some of that is the labour costs.

Andy can also get the correct original plugs for the RS, whereas all ford dealers now get routed by fords ECAT parts system to a generic plug , normally used in the ST.

I got hit with this issue in 2019 when I had the plugs changed by them in 2019 Dave and they fitted the ST225 ones 🙈

So I bought 2 sets of genuine plugs off Andy at the time and still have a new set sitting.
I was hoping to give them the set I had and them just fitting but at those prices I think I might pass or look elsewhere for servicing - trouble is there isn't a lot of reputable choice in NI and TrustFord seem to have the greater Belfast area wrapped up.

Thanks for the heads up though!

Just checked my A&K Motorsport order, Andy charged me £40 delivered in July 2021.

5x Genuine Bosch Iridium Mk2 RS Sparkplugs

Edit: I cannot find the invoice for the service now as I included the history when I sold my mk2, however it was at Rates.

Main Dealers charge main dealer prices 😩 I too have had spark plugs supplied by A&K and like said above ☝ certainly didn’t cost £170 and besides the rs plugs at Ford have been superseded by the ST ones so technically you‘ll be paying £170 for plugs that differ from the original factory fitted rs items, £40-£50 gets you plugs from A&K as first fitted to RS’s from build 👍 always a great service from A&K too 👍

Well, my car has had the superceded ST plugs since whenever Ford changed to them & my car gets better mpg & runs just as before, so am happy with them. One thing to point out is my car is standard.
yeah but 170 quid is a lot of money for five plugs Gaz 😂

my above post (edited) might have sounded like a dig at the ST plugs but I was thinking more about a discussion on the forum about the plugs a while ago, I think people were disappointed about the original rs plugs going obsolete as it were 😉

Agreed £170 is shocking!

Knew what you were getting at Jim. (y)

If people already have plugs they've bought, put them in yourselves, it's really not rocket science to do! ;)

It may be a placebo effect but my car seems to run better on cold start but defo 5 mpg better, I wouldn't go back to the original plug personally & whatever people think of Ford, they wouldn't say the ST plug is suitable if it wasn't, they sort of know what they're doing! 😁 (can't say the same some dealers)! 😂

£170 for spark plugs!!! are they hand made, lol. If you take the £34 from the aircon service, at £466 it is not that bad in this current climate of price rises.
But £170 for plugs, they definitely took your pants down and gave you a slap on the ass.

Trying to find plugs for my old escort was a nightmare went cooler spec motor craft

when it was tuned it had champion c57c race plugs
Try finding those now
I have one set left now and the old set I replaced
( il admit it never got 3k use but they got changed every year regardless, cleaned up I’m sure they would be fine)

It was night and day between the ST and RS plugs on an MR420 mate, I knew there was something not right with the car as soon as I drove it after they were put in. It sounds like it's not an issue for a standard RS (as you would expect if Ford are happy to put them in).

Some people saying that £466 is a rip-off for a standard oil, filter and pollen filter service and some saying it's just main dealer prices. I'm not too hung up on the spark plug price as I'm not getting them to do it anyway as they'll put the ST plugs in so pointless anyway.

But eager to hear what other people have paid for a standard oil, filter and pollen filter service in the past few months as to me £466 is ludicrous.

Thanks again in advance for any other experiences/comments.

Hi Simon hope your well.
Slightly off topic but I renewed my 3 years service plan 4 months ago with ford stoneacre at a cost of £20.87 a month which includes all services mots punctures and roadside assistance!
I hope as it's a contract that they can't increase payments?

I tend to source all the items for a service myself and get my local independent garage to fit them. I usually get my oil from Opie oils as they are local to me and filters from Matt Lewis motor sport. Both direct not through a third party as it works out cheaper.
