Hi everyone ... need some local knowledge to help plan our 40th birthday road trip from the 'Ring to Monza. We're coming from Australia and I don't want to **** it up!

I'm thinking of flying into Cologne. Is it easy to get to the 'Ring from there (driving)? I can see there are plenty of hotels to choose from close to the track.

I'm leaning towards hiring a track car for a day, then getting back into the hire car and driving down to Monza via the Susten, Grimsel and Furka Pass, and flying home from Milan (probably).

Here are the questions please ....

Does anyone know of a hire car company that won't fleece me for a one way hire in something exotic that I can enjoy these roads in?

What time of the year can I go to make sure the Passes are actually passable, i.e. no snow, etc?

Has anyone tried the F1 driving experience at Monza? Would you recommend it?

Looking forward to any intel :yep:

Cheers guys.

Sound like an amazing trip.

Can't help with everything you need but the airport you've chosen is suitable.

For a Ring hire car rent4ring is a good place to look. Hotels near the ring id recommend the Dorint.

The passes should be snow free April to early October iirc and the Ring is also open the same time :)

@slipperywun

Yes Cologne is closest main airport to Nürburgring, I used to live near Cologne in 1984/85 and used to drive through Adenauer (closest main town to Nürburgring) for a drive out of a weekend.

Although I can't help with the journey from Nürburgring to Monza though, although having just re-read this thread maybe I can help a bit.

Give me a few minutes and I will post a few links to some Nürburgring trip info from previous European meets at the ring.

Lots of general information about the area here http://www.nurburgring.org.uk

This photographer is a personal friend of mine who lives near the Nürburgring, he might be willing to take some photos or video of you for a price http://mikefrison.com

Nurburgring tourist drive dates, check it regularly as things do change http://www.nuerburgring.de/en/drives-fun/drives/tourist-rides/tourist-rides-nordschleife/opening-times-nordschleife.html?month_20=12&year_20=2014

Nurburgring spectator viewing points incl a TomTom poi file (bottom of page) http://www.northloop.co.uk/photography.htm

Another helpful site incl hire if cars is http://www.heiser.net/documents/nurburgring/

for add'l items for Nurburgring Trip. Status & Documents thread this last link has lots of useful PDF documents you can download.

Things to do and see in Germany on your journey from Nürburgring to Monza:
Take a drive along the Mosel river, stunning scenery and some nice climbs into the vineyards along the river giving spectacular views ( one of the PDFs or TomTom itineries was put together by me based in info from a German motorcyclist friend of mine).

Drosselgasser in Rüdesheim along the Rhine https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/R%C3%BCdesheim_am_Rhein

Another possible place to visit on your journey is the Steiff toy museum near Stuttgart, another place I have promised to take my wife
https://www.steiff.com/site/en/the-museum/visitor-information/

Black Forest high road, stunning 60 km drive http://www.black-forest-travel.com/high-road/

King Ludwigs castles in Bavaria https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ludwig_II_of_Bavaria
- Nueswanstein castle http://www.neuschwanstein.de/englisch/ludwig/palaces.htm
- Herrenchiemsee on link above
- Londerhof castle http://www.linderhof.de
All of these are minor detours on your route to Monza I would say

If you are religious then Obberamergau is worth a visit as it is the location of the passion play, held every 10 years by the locals https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Passion_Play#The_Oberammergau_Passion_Play
as is garnish-Partenkirchen
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Garmisch-Partenkirchen Which has a fair bit of history, especially for winter sports

Berchetsgarten is a beautiful area, https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berchtesgaden
lovely lake or cable car ride up the mountain or you can go visit Hitlers Eagles Nest http://www.kehlsteinhaus.com

If you or your partner are into horses then the Spanish riding school Lipizzaners in Vienna could be worth a visit, something I have promised my wife http://www.srs.at/en_US/start-en/

If you are over for long enough and fancy some culture in the form or art & sculpture then a must is to visit Florence after Monza maybe, I spent a week their with my wife & daughter and we could have done with 2-3 weeks to see everything without rushing. Michaelangeloes David sculpture is awesome, as is the Ufizzi gallery and the church architecture.

Regarding when I would say between late April to mid September would give you the better weather.

I think you would be better to pay for a good brand name for drop off at a different location.

Avis, Hertz & Europcar come to mind.

But it also depends on how exotic you want, as this could limit the availability from these companies and require a specialist car hire company, which might not be as cheap.

Try these

http://www.motion-drive-rental.com this one has an office in Naples as well

Or these from this search
