This thread has been started following the Group buy for 2012 Nav Disks and is aimed at helping owners of early cars without Bluetooth (BT) streaming to enable it.

This thread is aimed at providing forum members with a source of information for Sat Nav Head end updates (e.g. V5.3 DVD Update).
These updates control the Navigation and other media unit features which is the basis for the Audio/Media Updates that can be done via USB stick FAT formatted (assumes factory fitted USB connection in armrest). http://www.focusrsoc...100#entry344264
Update 4-11-2018: people have used 8gb FAT32 formatted USB pens as well, see https://www.focusrsoc.com/forums/topic/22199-bluetooth-streaming-update-via-v53-software-nov-2012-lux-2-only/page-20#entry6709195

N.B. the updates require High Nav function which includes BT/USB see later post via this link
https://www.focusrsoc.com/forums/topic/22199-bluetooth-streaming-update-via-v53-software-nov-2012-lux-2-only/#entry344141

Whether you need this update depends on the age of the car, the early 2009 head units also have less memory (RAM) / capacity than the 2010 units hence the need to clear all memory in the unit (radio stations, destinations etc).

Here are the various versions so you can check what you currently have:-

Version 5.3 - 1218_100429 - 29th April 2010
Version 5.2 - 1216_091204 - 4th December 2009
Version 5.1 - 1005_090802 - 2nd August 2009
Version 5.0 - 0843_090128 - 28th January 2009

On the early units, it's best to clear all the stored destinations, radio stations etc, basically do a factory reset before updating anything.
When updating via DVD & USB, leave the engine running on idle whilst doing it, to stabilise the voltage, to make sure it's successful 1st time.

Regional contacts with V5.3 Disk, either willing to do upgrade or loan people the disk:Post 3 is a step by step guide

However, Its all fairly simple if you follow the guidance in this thread, if you don't feel comfortable then get along to a meet where someone has done it before and I am sure they will help out.
  • The V5.3 (DVD) takes about 30 mins - (engine should be idling & Nav memory cleared of everything incl radio stations)
  • The Media update (a small USB drive <1gb in FAT format) takes about 20 mins (can be done by anyone who knows how to unzip a file to a usb pen & can follow written instructions that are in the zip file)
  • The ELMConfig of the BT/USB/Voice module (if needed) takes about 2 mins. but does need the ELM cable & Software on a laptop
These are all things that a dealer will do for you and charge for usually, but most of the time all one is doing is sitting watching the display for any messages, not really hard unless one is easily distracted and misses a message that was important.

TMC (Traffic Message Channel) Please note:TMC messaging info relating to Sat Nav disk years has been added at the bottom of Post 1.

includes all the voice command options of the unit not just Navigation items (e.g. radio; climate; CD; Phone etc as well as voice control of nav unit itself)

Update 5-11-2013
There are low Nav & high Nav units, it depends on whether the vehicle was fitted with the Bluetooth/USB module from new or not.
This may limit options for the BT upgrade using v5.3, I am trying to find out more details from Bosch.

I have now qualified with some knowledgeable people that one needs the High Series options installed for Bluetooth Streaming to work.
e.g. BT/USB was an option when ordering the RS, if this is not installed then it wil need that update to be done first, ahead of any Firmware update

Will add a link to the thread with the parts list for retro fitting BT/USB when I get a chance (or Clive will).

Also V5.3 is the last one issued and one does not need to install the others first, 5.3 will have all the previous versions fixes.

Update 9-Jan-2014
It is essential that all stored memory destinations are remove or a factory reset performed on the unit prior to trying to update using the v5.3 software.
This is because the memory can overfill and result in a failed update.
So make a note of all your radio stations and any other bits of important info (entrance Gate to nürburgring).

Update 25-May-2014:
Well today at the Essex Meet it was proven that occasionally one needs to update the modules using the ELMConfig Cable & software so that the BT is displayed in the CD/AUX Menu.
This was proven on Gareth350's car today, when Poopdeck enabled the last of the options in the list in image below.

Copied from Sat Nav Disk Group buy thread.

Thanks for that link.

I burned the latest ISO SP5.3 file to a DVD and have just successfully updated the base firmware of my head unit.

These steps are pretty much spot on - http://www.talkford....i/#entry1858068

The only changes I made were...

a) Didn't start the engine (just pressed the button to run the unit for 1 hour)
b) Didn't disconnect the battery
c) After the upgrade had finished and the unit went blank... I waited 60 seconds before tuning the unit on manually.

I tested this with a 2009 NAV disk - On re insertion of the 2009 disk, the system will downgrade the NAV firmware to that of a level compatible with your disk. I assume, that 2012 disks will not have this problem.

From what I can gather there are 3 main updates with the Lux Pack 2 sat nav system... I'm no expert on this system, far from it - but I think I have a rough understanding now (please feel free to correct!)

1 - Media update (see connectivity thread)
2 - Main / NAV firmware update (This thread)
3 - NAV Map update (Dave's DVD)

Number 2 on this list is taken care of by running a ford CD/DVD in the head unit to upgrade the firmware of the device. It seems that Ford will charge you in the region of £75 for this pleasure, but seeing as someone has leaked the update CD/DVD to the internet it's now pretty much free

You need to obtain the .ISO file from the talkford thread linked above.. and then follow these steps. The latest version is known as SP5.3

PLEASE NOTE - THIS UPDATE COULD "BRICK" YOUR DEVICE - USE CAUTION WHEN PERFORMING THIS UPGRADE - YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED

My system has the 2009 NAV DVD. I've since been told than you must have a NAV dvd of >=2008 before doing this update.

1 - Burn the chosen SP ISO file to DVD (CD's might work, but I did not test it.) If you don't know how to burn an ISO file then STOP - this update is not for you.

2 - Start the nav unit, but ensure all other systems such as AC and Lights are turned off.

3 - Find your radio code and eject the current NAV dvd

4 - Insert your freshly burned DVD. The system will then display the current running firmware versions, and the updated version if applicable from your DVD. If the version on the DVD is greater than your system you can start the upgrade by hitting "Continue"

5 - The upgrade will take approx 10-15 minutes. During this time DO NOT press any buttons or kill the power to the unit. You will see screens such as this during the upgrade.

Computer Personal computer Font Gadget Display device
Rectangle Font Electric blue Technology Pattern

6 - After the upgrade has finished, and the DVD has stopped spinning the unit will switch off. I waited 60 seconds before pressing the unit's power button.

7 - Re enter the system menu and eject your upgrade DVD, replacing it with your chosen NAV dvd. If like me, your running a 2009 DVD the system will then complain that the NAV portion of the firmware upgrade is not compatible with your disk.

Allow the system to downgrade the NAV firmware if prompted.

Questions
1 - Will this update be reversed if I don't have the latest 2012 Map dvd
Kinda! The upgrade will upgrade two parts of the head unit. The Main firmware, and the Nav firmware. If you don't posses the latest NAV dvd then the system will revert the NAV firmware to a compatible version BUT will leave the Main firmware as upgraded.

2 - Do I loose any settings?
I lost my radio presets, and the NAV language reverted back to English Metric after the upgrade.

3 - Does this update provide bluetooth streaming?
In my experience... No it doesn't. I believe you need ford to enable that feature. My unit still only has CD, Aux and Ipod.

Please feel free to ask any more questions, and I will try to answer them.

If anyone wants a hand and get can their car over to Hertfordshire, I'm happy to help them!

So burning the file to a disk, isit the file straight to the disk as downloaded,or zip it, or some other way you convert it to SP ISO file ??

An ISO file is an image of the CD / DVD. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO_image

This file has to be written to the CD / DVD by a disk authoring program that understands ISO files (Most do now)

You cannot simply just "place" the ISO file onto an empty disk, this will not achieve the desired result.

There are lots of guides online of how to do this, one example - http://www.petri.co....files_to_cd.htm

Obviously the instructions are different depending on what burning software you are using.

I'm on iMac any tips on the best programe for doing this on a mac
Its easy on a mac mate, stick the DVD in the drive, go into disk utility, find the DVD drive, and go to 'Burn Image' at the top. Choose the file that you have downloaded, and it will do the rest for you.

On Windows, I use a program called 'CD Burner XP' to burn ISO images and never had any issues.

On another note, it sounds like its worth waiting for Daves disk before doing this? As it seems a little pointless doing it now, because as soon as we stick the 2009 DVD in again its just going to put it back? (some of it anyway)

Guys, this is turning into a really informative thread that others wil find useful in the future.

Can I propose that GaryB incorporates all the Questions and answers into Post # 3 and as these are incorporated we edit our individual posts to remove excess content stating "Post #3 updated"

This will keep all the relevant info together and not stretch this thread out to much.

As said mate you might need to unzip it first.

Not at home at the moment but will check it out and post again when I get back.

Discs are arriving Monday though, Saturday delivery would have been more!

Post updated to show comparison of Main SW versions. Notice the NAV rolled back to the previous version with my 2009 disk - With 2012 disk's I expect this to change.

It would be great if someone with a 2012 disk could post a screen shot of their SW version after inserting the 2012 disk, but PRIOR to performing any firmware upgrades

It's possible you need to run "repair disk permissions" from Disk Utility on the main hard disk volume on the iMac (not on the CD/DVD drive). I have noticed in the past that Mac OS X seems sensitive to file permissions following updates.
