At the start of the summer I noticed my car was losing coolant, it went into pete at demon performance for a service and he noticed it also but we looked and couldn't find leak, the car had an Airtec radiator fitted 2 years ago so assumed this wouldn't be the issue and i dreaded the worst!!

last week I decided to have a look as the car had been sat in the garage for about 6 weeks and not moved, i looked on the under tray and there lay nearly full header tank of coolant! so i started stripping the front end off and it turns out the radiator was leaking from the end of the core, off it came and i got in touch with Autospecialists they asked if i could send the radiator to them so they could inspect but the best they could do was to offer me a discount on another a the radiator was 12 months out of warranty.

So i sent the radiator to them and have received an email today saying a replacement radiator is on its way to me FREE OF CHARGE!

this is really a thank you to Autospecialists for sorting me out even though the rad shouldn't have been faulty after 2 year and not many miles.

So know all is left to do is refit and decide weather to go waterless coolant or stick with the standard??.....

I bought an airtec radiator 15 months ago with no problems, I remember checking the coolant about 1-2 weeks ago and still fine. BUT, today I checked and there's hardly any coolant left, I let the engine run to see if it improved but alas it did not. I will not be happy if my radiator has failed. How's best to check what's happened?

The best way to check is to re-fill the cooling system the pressure test it, this alone will find and pin-point any leaks on the radiator

You're not alone... just ask Yarde about his. Think he has had his replaced a few times.

Believe there was a bad batch of airtec rad's... that is supposedly sorted now but would explain yours as you had it fitted 2 years ago.

I was going to put an Airtech in mine, but as always, the best course of action is to ask on this forum before doing anything.

In fact the horror stories about Airtech made me switch to Mishimoto, but then several reports on here cited that one as having problems too!

Mine has a Pro Alloy in it now, which I'm hoping will go the distance.

if AS didnt do anything i was going to go Pro Alloy but with them replaceing it FOC im going to stick with it, hopefully they have sorted the issues they were having with them.

If you dont have a pressure tester (which i dont) the sponge will be wet under the rad if its that or get it up to temperature (which will cause the system to pressurise) and have a nosey underneath and round the rad to see if you can see the leak.

mine had gone in the bottom right hand corner as you look at the car right on the end where the fins meet the end caps.

By the sound of it on other threads, the problem seemed to be a dodgy batch of cores, which AS don't actually manufacture. If that has now been sorted, then hopefully your replacement should be okay, since all the guys with early Airtech rads seem to be fine.

Fingers crossed for you!

we have seen a good few AS units fail over the years sadly , very strange but i would be surprised if its just one batch - even though thats the logical thing to say to an end user - its been too common for it to just be one batch

we sell the Mishimoto product as well and havent had the same issues there (although i see reference countering that above) - the great thing is that both companies offer a no quibble warranty so despite the problems you are sure to get it replaced whoever you choose

we used Spec R in our own car and never had any issues and ive not heard any reports of issues with Pro Alloy either so there are some good options out ther for everyone

cheers

jason

Hi all
I'm new to the focus RS, quick question , is there a problem with OE radiators , as see you are talking of after market replacements , or is it jjust that the aftermarket ones have better cooling capabilities over OE .
Thanks

I bought a mishimoto two weeks ago and I was impressed with the build quality when I took it out the box

I hunted the Internet for a good price and the best I found was from Murry Motorsport Ireland

http://www.murraymotorsport.com/products/mishimoto-alloy-radiator-ford-focus-rs-09-11

I should add the radiator was not in stock so Murry Motorsport arranged for me to get it next day from the factory

Is that price correct, or simply just because of the VAT difference from UK and Ireland
