Not quite the midlands- but Id very highly recommend Royal steering wheels in Aylesbury. Just had my MX5 wheel done by them and they did an amazing job.
I'd second royal steering wheels, They did mine in my mk1 and had a couple evos done before by them. Cant fault them, I've always gone with alcantara though.

Every Mk1 for sale I see needs a decent steering wheel refurb...
Definitely 1st mod to do would be take it to that place to get it looking nice...

A long time back when I had the Mk 1 a lot of owners were using a bloke who did a refurbished steering wheel on an exchange basis, can't remember who he was but Clayton Borg may have some info.

1st thing i done with mine changed the wheel out for Alcantara trimmed wheel

Is that much better
Feels nicer and looks better IMO, but if youre using the car often it will go tatty if not taken care of.
